Swifts vs. Hawk

Howdy Friends,

Apparently this happens every year.  A ton of birds (swifts?) go to this school in NW Portland around sunset.  They circle around for an hour then fly into the chimney right before it's too dark to see.  It sounds boring but it was really awesome.
We ended up seeing two hawks tonight as well.  The first showed up a little after we did and perched on the chimney for most of the "dance."  Close to the end another hawk showed up and attacked the swifts.  I'm not sure who I was rooting for, I don't want anyone to die.

I think the hawk got one though.

Here is a closeup of the action:

'Lights Out'

Howdy Friends,

I headed down to the waterfront to get a good sunset photo.  Said sunset never happened so I got some dragon boaters instead.

Nintendo vs. Sega (I've always felt the two were mutually exclusive)

Howdy Friends,

Good news today.  I was invited to compete in the Coffee Fest NW latte art competition.  It should be fun but I'm already a little bit nervous.

Also, I will be taking a photography class in November so hopefully* I'll learn a thing or two about a thing or two.

Hello Stairs

Howdy Friends,

I know that a popular musician never wrote the classic hit "Hello Stairs" but it seems to fit in with my laziness theme.

Why Does Taking Pictures Make You Want To Break Into Places?

Howdy Friends,

I had a hard time deciding which photo to use today. I took this one right before I was extremely disappointed at the fact that I couldn't break into (outto?) the roof.

Oh well.  You can't trespass them all.

Hello Walls

Howdy Friends,

I never was used to getting up at 5 a.m. but it seems to have gotten worse lately.  My spaceyness = picture of a wall.

You're welcome.

Happy Birthday Michael!

Howdy Friends,

I chose this photo because it's pretty much as New Mexico as you can get. ALMOST.

THIS one is as New Mexico as you can get:

It seems that everyone has at least one car (old or new) parked in their front yard.

Update: Bonus Post

Howdy Friends,

This is Jupiter and three of its moons.  Last night we got to see four. I'm not sure what the blue thing in the corner is.

Here is a closeup:

Another Confusing Reflection Photograph

Howdy Friends,

Jupiter is the closest to the Earth that it has been since 1963.  If you have a pair of binoculars, you can see four [according to Shannon, numerals under 10 (ten) should be spelled out] of its moons.

Science.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Howdy Friends,

Shannon and I headed to downtown Santa Fe to return some sweater thing she got for her mom (don't worry her mom knows).  We stumbled upon la Virgen de Guadalupe on the way back to the car.  It appeared to be a place where you could write down prayers/requests and light candles. I couldn't think of anything that I wanted God to give me so I just took the photos.

After that we caught lunch with some of my old friends.  Not that they are too old because they are the same age as me, I've just known them a long time.  It was really cool to see them.  One of the highlights of the trip so far.

Kaylee Smoking a Cigar

Howdy Friends,

We made it to New Mexico!!  It was a rough landing though, I started to get REALLY sick.  I quickly forgot about my nausea after meeting Shannon's folks' new puppy: Kaylee. She is a really cool dog.

I'm glad I brought the laptop so that I can keep up with the blog.  Hopefully, I'll be able to get some photos of the typical New Mexican landscape next.

We will see.

Do You Think I'm Dramatic? ANSWER ME!!!!!

Howdy Friends,

The wife and I are headed to New Mexico tomorrow!  It's almost been two years since we've been there.  It'll be nice to see the folks and siblings and folks in-law.

There isn't much time to left to get ready so I should do that.  Not that I don't LOVE spending time with you guys, I just have a lot to do.

Hopefully a Lazy Saturday.

Howdy Friends,

I'm not particularly fond of either of these photos but I couldn't decide between the two.

On a side note: if any of you guys own something that you just want to get rid of but don't want to throw away, I strongly suggest posting on the free portion of craigslist.  We literally had someone claim our old bed frame within five minutes of the post.  The same thing happened for our moving boxes.

The flip-side to that is: If you want free stuff checkout the free portion of craigslist but don't hesitate, it goes quickly.

On another side note:  I'm old.  Shannon and I went to a show last night and I ran into a guy I hadn't seen in a while.  We ended up talking about real estate.

That is all.

Matt

Happy Birthday Shannon!!!!

Howdy Friends,

It was a good day.  It's still going too.

Today is Shannon's birthday.  She is 25 today (really she's 26 but don't let her know that you know).  We started the day with oatmeal pancakes.  This is basically like starting the day with a cup of coffee and a plate full of delicious oatmeal cookies soaking in maple syrup.  Not a bad way to start the day.

OHHHHH backup a bit to before said pancakes.  We woke up in our AWESOME new bed.  Apparently while sleeping you should feel comfortable, who knew?

Back up to speed.  We then moved on to explore Portland's Japanese garden.  I took 268 photos there and didn't feel like a hipster while doing it.  I just felt like a tourist.

We just got back to the house from eating dinner and are about to eat some cake.  THEN we are going to a show (Okkervil River).  It was a busy and fun day.  I think Shannon had a good time and that makes me happy.

Bedtime!

Howdy Friends,

No, I'm not going to bed right now.  It's only 6 p.m.  I'll be up for at LEAST another 2.5 hours.  The title of this post is in celebration of the new mattress that Shannon and I purchased.  I look forward to sleeping tonight.  I look forward to sleeping every night but still.

Bird on a Wire

Howdy Friends,

For those of you who don't know, I wake up at 5 a.m. every morning.  I spend the first half hour of my day listening to NPR and drinking coffee [yes, I work in a coffee shop and get free coffee (no, I can't wait)].  Then I leave at ~5:45 a.m. to get to work by 6 a.m.  I'm typing "a.m." a lot to emphasize the fact that I get up REALLY REALLY EARLY.

This morning was different.

I stepped outside at exactly 5:43 a.m. in order to get my scooter warmed up in time to leave.  It turns out that it rained so hard my scooter fell over (I'm giving mankind the benefit of the doubt here).  This normally wouldn't be a huge deal but I left the fuel line open for the first time ever.  Thus fuel and oil were everywhere.  It took about 20 minutes of kick starting the scooter to get it to actually turn on.

I was my own personal BP.  It was horrible.

It's Another Building

Howdy Friends,

I spent the day being manly. I changed the spark plugs in Shannon's car (yes, I paid for half of it but apparently that doesn't matter) and messed with the scooter a bit more. Then I got really frustrated. Doing manly things rules.

Matt

I Keep Running Around

Howdy Friends,

I decided to drive up to Mt. Tabor park both to explore and see how my scooter was running.  I put in a new spark plug and have been messing with the air/fuel mixture screw.  The scooter still isn't running great but the hike was nice.

I got a few photos that I liked alright.  There are more posted in the picasa album (just click the photo to be sent there).

Weekends go by way too quickly.
